Statement J. C. B. Kirsch, Founder of the Delphic Games of the Modern Era
At first, I just wanted to reactivate music and dance within the school's curriculum. That was in the middle of the eighties when I was living in Munich. It was then when I began to familiarise myself with the nature of competitions in the arts and to explore musical diversity. I became in particular interested how such competitions were organised in Ancient Greece.
I became curious and visited Greece to see myself the ruins of Delphi in the hope to find traces of that competition called the Delphic Games. However, I realised then and after returning back home that very little information had been passed on about the Delphic Games through the ages till the present. Still by having been in Delphi, I was able to imagine how magnificent and splendid the Delphic Games must have been! It became apparent to me whilst Delphi flourished in its glory, the Delphic Games were supplemented by a peaceful co-existence with the whole region.
My visit to Greece became an obsession for life, namely to succeed in reviving the Delphic Games. I started to search on every continent for people who would be willing to accompany me on this dream - and I succeeded. We founded the International Delphic Council in 1994. A dream became reality.
In 1997 a truly historical event took place when the Georgian city of Tbilisi hosted the very first Junior Delphic Games. Another rewarding highlight took place in 2009, prior to the opening of the III Delphic Games 2009 in Jeju, South Korea, when a ritual ceremony was conducted at the Kastalian Spring in Delphi, and "water" became the symbol of the Delphic Games again - as in Ancient times.
May the Delphic Peace guide future Delphic Games as it had been the case for over 1000 years in ancient Greece.
